3. David Warner was dismissed before lunch for 38 by Umesh Yadav.

4. M Renshaw remained the top scorer for his team on day one. He scored 68 before being dismissed by Ashwin. He played his innings in two parts. Renshaw, who retired hurt (at 36) late in the morning session because of a stomach bug, returned to bat following the dismissal of Smith.

5. Australian Captain Smith was looking good and survived 95 balls for 27 runs before he was caught by captain Virat Kohli at midwicket on the bowling of Ashwin.
