Kolkata, Oct 28. Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday named former Australian batsman Simon Katich as their assistant coach for the 2016 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

"The Kolkata Knight Riders are pleased to announce the appointment of former Australian cricketer Simon Katich as the new assistant coach of the team. Katich will be assisting Jacques Kallis who was recently announced as the head coach," a KKR release said.

Katich was an opener for Australia and Perth Scorchers and was also a handy chinaman bowler. The 56-Test veteran led his Big Bash League (BBL) side Scorchers to the title in 2014 before hanging up his boots.  Katich presently works with Australian Football League (AFL) club Western Sydney Giants as operations manager.

"Simon Katich is a great addition to KKR. I am sure his T20 experience as well as his well organised coaching skills will come in handy for the KKR players,” KKR managing director Venky Mysore said.

KKR’s newly appointed head coach Kallis said: "It is great to have Simon on my management team. I have played many games against him and his understanding of the game is very good. He is a great asset to have and I really look forward to formulating plans with him and the rest of the team to help KKR to another title in 2016."
