India Test vice-captain and opener KL Rahul paid tribute to off-spinner Harbhajan Singh on his retirement, citing him as 'one of the greatest spinners to have played for the country'. The 41-year-old Harbhajan announced his retirement from all forms of the game on Friday, bringing down the curtain on a glorious career spanning 23 years.
"Bhajji Pa has been one of the greatest spinners for our country and for us, as youngsters when we came to the dressing room, he has been very supportive and really welcomed us into the team. So, I would like to wish him all the very best for the next chapter of his career. We have had some great time. A big thank you to him and wish him the very best," said Rahul in the virtual press conference ahead of the first Test against South Africa starting from Sunday.
The off-spinner from Jalandhar in Punjab represented India in 103 Tests, 236 ODIs, and 28 T20Is, picking up 417, 269, and 25 wickets respectively. His overall tally of 707 international wickets is the second-highest for India, behind leg-spinning great Anil Kumble's 953 scalps. He was also a handy contributor with the bat, scoring 3,569 runs with two centuries and nine fifties.
