Let's take a look at how all 10 franchises fared in the IPL 2023 mini-auction.

December 23rd saw an action-packed day in Kochi as the IPL 2023 mini auctions took place. A total of 80 players were sold for a whopping sum of 167 crores as franchises built their final sides for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. 

While some teams managed to complete the missing pieces of their jigsaw puzzle, a few teams are yet lacking in some of the departments. Sam Curran emerged as the most expensive player in the IPL auction history, and there were other players who attracted a bidding war as well.

Let's take a look at how all 10 franchises fared in the IPL 2023 mini-auction. 

#1. Chennai Super Kings 

Remaining Purse Amount before Auction: 20.45 cr INR

Notable Buys: Ben Stokes (16.25 crore) was the biggest buy for the 4-time champions as they added yet another all-rounder to the likes of Ravindra Jadeja & Moeen Ali. CSK also bought New Zealand pacer, Kyle Jamieson, for 1 cr, while Ajinkya Rahane was also bought in the Super Kings army for 50 lakhs. 

Players bought: Ajinkya Rahane (50 Lakh), Ben Stokes (16.25 Crore), Shaik Rasheed (20 Lakh), Nishant Sindhu (60 Lakh), Kyle Jamieson (1 Crore), Ajay Mondal (20 Lakh), Bhagat Verma (20 Lakh)


#2. Gujarat Titans

Remaining Purse Amount before Auction: 19.25 cr INR

Notable Buys: Gujarat Titans spent wisely in the auction and young Indian pacer Shivam Mavi (6 cr) was their most expensive buy. Titans also became the first IPL team to buy an Irish player as Joshua Little was acquired for 4.4 cr. Gujarat were the only team who bidded on NZ captain Kane Williamson (2 cr) while they also invested in the young Indian keeper-batter KS Bharat (1.2 cr). 

Players bought: Kane Williamson (Rs 2 crore), Odean Smith (Rs 50 lakh), KS Bharat (Rs 1.2 crore), Shivam Mavi (Rs 6 crore), Urvil Patel (Rs 20 lakh), Joshua Little (Rs 4.4 crore), Mohit Sharma ( 50 lakhs).


#3. Delhi Capitals 

Remaining Purse Amount before Auction: 19.45 cr INR

Notable Buys: Delhi Capitals had 19.45 crores in their purse and bought just 5 players, where South African batter Rilee Rossouw (4.6 cr) was their most notable buy. Delhi spent 5.5 cr on pacer Mukesh Kumar and 2.4 cr on Manish Pandey. The franchise also added Phil Salt (2 cr) to their ranks alongwith veteran Indian pacer Ishant Sharma (50 lakhs). 

Players bought: Ishant Sharma (Rs 50 lakh), Phil Salt (Rs 2 crore), Mukesh Kumar (Rs 5.5 crore), Manish Pandey (Rs 2.4 crore), Rilee Rossouw (Rs 4.6 crore).


#4. Royal Challengers Bangalore 

Remaining Purse Amount before Auction: 8.75 cr INR

Notable Buys: With only 8.75 cr in their bank, the RCB were more or less complete prior to the auction. The franchise went for English pacer Reece Topley (1.9 cr) who will most probably play as a backup to Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood, while Englishman Will Jacks (3.20 cr) was also acquired, maybe as a backup to all-rounder Glenn Maxwell.

RCB also invested in a bunch of youngsters and it will be interesting to see how these surprise packages unwrap in the IPL 2023. 

Players bought: Reece Topley (Rs 1.90 crore), Himanshu Sharma (Rs 20 lakhs), Will Jacks (Rs 3.20 crore), Manoj Bhandage (Rs 20 lakhs), Rajan Kumar (Rs 70 lakhs), Avinash Singh (Rs 20 lakhs), Sonu Yadav (Rs 20 lakhs)


#5. Mumbai Indians

Remaining Purse Amount before Auction: 20.55 cr INR

Notable Buys: Mumbai Indians already had enough firepower in their squad before the auction, and went on to add new guns to their artillery. Mumbai bidded heavily on Australian all-rounder Cameron Green and bought him for 17.5 cr. Jhye Richardson (1.50 cr) was acquired as a back up to Jofra Archer while Marco Jansen's twin brother, Duan Jansen (20 lakh) can be a surprise bowler. With Tim David, Tilak Verma, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis already in the team, Mumbai are looking the most dangerous batting unit on paper ahead of IPL 2023. 

Players bought: Cameron Green (Rs 17.50 crore), Jhye Richardson (Rs 1.50 crore), Piyush Chawla (Rs 50 lakhs), Duan Jansen (Rs 20 lakh), Vishnu Vinod (Rs 20 lakhs), Shams Mulani (Rs. 20 lakh), Nehal Wadhera (Rs 20 lakh), Raghav Goyal (Rs 20 lakh)


#6. Kolkata Knight Riders

Remaining Purse Amount before Auction: 7.05 cr INR

Notable Buys: KKR had the lowest purse amount remaining before the auction and their auction was more or less silent, with Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan (1.5 cr) being their most expensive buy. Kolkata Knight Riders also became the first IPL franchise to have more than 1 Bangladesh player in their squad at once, as they also acquried Litton Das (50 lakhs). Namibian David Wiese (1 cr) was their second highest buy. KKR had a steal deal as they in form uncapped Indian batter N Jagadeesan for just 90 lakhs INR. 

Players bought: Vaibhav Arora (Rs 20 lakh), N Jagadeesan (Rs 90 lakhs), Suyash Sharma (Rs 20 lakh), David Wiese (Rs 1 crore), Kulwant Khejroliya (Rs 20 lakh), Litton Das (Rs 50 lakh), Mandeep Singh (Rs 50 lakh), Shakib Al Hasan (Rs 1.50 crore)


#7. Rajasthan Royals

Remaining Purse Amount before Auction: 13.2 cr INR

Notable Buys: Rajasthan Royals went up to 13 crores for Harry Brook but couldn't buy due to purse constraints. West Indian all-rounder Jason Holder was their top buy at 2 crores INR, while Australian spinner Adam Zampa was picked for 1.5 crores. Rajasthan also acquired Englishman Joe Root for 1 crore, who'll be coming to play in the IPL for the first time. 

Players bought: Jason Holder (Rs 2 crore), Donavon Ferreira (Rs 20 lakh), Kunal Singh Rathore (Rs 20 lakh), Adam Zampa (Rs 1.50 crore), KM Asif (Rs 30 lakh), Murugan Ashwin (Rs 20 lakh), Akash Vashisht (Rs 20 lakh), Abdul Basith (Rs 20 lakh), Joe Root (Rs 1 crore)


#8. Punjab Kings

Remaining Purse Amount before Auction: 32.2 cr INR

Notable Buys: Punjab Kings had a considerable amount in their purse and they spent without constraints to acquire T20 World Cup 2022's player of the tournament Sam Curran. Curran emerged as the most expensive buy of the IPL auction history as Punjab Kings acquired him for 18.5 crores. However, the rest of Punjab's buys were in lakhs as they went back home with 12 crores still remaining in their purse. 

Players bought: Sam Curran (Rs 18.50 crore), Sikandar Raza (Rs 50 lakh), Harpreet Bhatia (Rs 40 lakh), Vidhwath Kaverappa (Rs 20 lakh), Mohit Rathee (Rs 20 lakh), Shivam Singh (Rs 20 lakh)


#9. Sunrisers Hyderabad

Remaining Purse Amount before Auction: 42.25 cr INR

Notable Buys: Sunrisers had the most amount in their purse going into the auction and spent heavily on 23-year old English batter Harry Brook (13.25 cr). Sunrisers also acquired explosive South African wicketkeeper batter Heinrich Klaasen (5.25 cr), English spinner Adil Rashid (2 cr) and West Indies' bowling all-rounder Akeal Hosein (1 cr). Hyderabad also went for Indian Mayank Agarwal (8.25 cr) and would be a good addition to their middle order. 

Players bought: Harry Brook (Rs 13.25 crore), Heinrich Klaasen (Rs 5.25 crore), Adil Rashid (Rs 2 crore), Mayank Markande (Rs 50 lakh), Mayank Agarwal (Rs 8.25 crore), Vivratn Sharma (Rs 2.60 crore), Samarth Vyas (Rs 20 lakh), Sanvir Singh (Rs 20 lakh), Upendra Yadav (Rs 25 lakh), Mayank Dagar (Rs 20 lakh), Nitish Reddy (Rs 20 lakh), Anmolpreet Singh (Rs 20 lakh), Akeal Hosein (Rs 1 crore)


#10. Lucknow Super Giants

Remaining Purse Amount before Auction: 23.35 cr INR

Notable Buys: Lucknow Super Giants went bonkers on Nicholas Pooran as they spent 16 crores on the West Indian explosive keeper-batter. Even though Pooran has displayed his big-hitting abilities in leagues all around the world, the 27-year-old is yet to fire in the IPL. However, Lucknow made their other buys mostly at base prices, adding the likes of Jaydev Unadkat (50 lakh), Romario Shepherd (50 lakh), Daniel Sams (75 lakh) and Naveen-ul-Haq (50 lakh).

Players bought: Nicholas Pooran (Rs 16 crore), Jaydev Unadkat (Rs 50 lakh), Yash Thakur (Rs 45 lakh), Romario Shepherd (Rs 50 lakh), Daniel Sams (Rs 75 lakh), Amit Mishra (Rs 50 lakh), Prerak mankad (Rs 20 lakh), Swapnil Singh (Rs 20 lakh), Naveen-ul-Haq (Rs 50 lakh), Yudhvir Charak (Rs 20 lakh)
