Cricket, Javelin, Olympics: Sunette Viljoen’s Remarkable Sporting Journey
This year, WPL misses out on Olympic medalist Sunette Viljoen, a rare dual-sport talent. The former South African cricketer, who played a Test and 17 ODIs, later became a world-class javelin thrower, winning silver at the Rio Olympics. Viljoen, 42, returned to cricket in domestic T20s and had even registered for the WPL, but franchises overlooked the seasoned Olympian despite her proven skill and versatility.
Sunette Viljoen, who registered for Rs. 30 lakh, represented South Africa in 1 Test and 17 ODIs between 2000 and 2002. Her only Test was against India in March 2002 in Paarl, scoring 17 and 71 (as an 18-year-old). In ODIs, made her debut in 2000 (as a 16-year-old against England and became the youngest South Africa women cricketer) and ended with 198 runs and five wickets. This included 8 matches played in the Women's World Cup (in New Zealand), 2000/01.
