India’s upcoming T20I against Japan is being presented as a historic first. It certainly is. But the significance of the September 22 match, for the Suzuki Cup at the Sano International Cricket Ground, goes far beyond the fact that India and Japan will meet for the first time. The match will also launch celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of India-Japan diplomatic relations.

For India, the reigning T20 world champion, Japan represents a huge mismatch on paper, as they are ranked 41st in men’s T20Is.
