In the run-up to the clash against the UAE in New Delhi, where Afghanistan needed to win to end their winless run and keep their slim hopes of making it to the Super Eights alive, Omarzai’s numbers with the ball were mixed – he was his side’s highest wicket-taker with four scalps, but conceded 40-plus runs in both matches at an economy rate of 10.3.
But the thing about elite sportspersons is, when it matters the most, they step up with their best performance to carry the team to victory, and Omarzai did exactly that on Monday – picking 4-15 and hitting 40 not out with the bat – to give Afghanistan their first win of this competition. It also made Omarzai only the third player in this competition’s history, after Dwayne Bravo and Shakib Al Hasan, to claim a four-wicket haul and hit a 30-plus score in the same match.
