Alpine APL Pipers: Defending champions Alpine APL Pipers kicked off their campaign with a fighting win with black pieces over CheQ Mumba Masters 10-8, while FYERS American Gambits took an early lead with two wins from two matches on the opening day of the Global Chess League (GCL) Season 4 in Bengaluru on Saturday.
The Gambits opened the day with a 10-4 win over PBG Alaskan Knights and then inflicted a second straight defeat on two-time champions Triveni Continental Kings, winning 14-5. In the day’s other match, Ganges Grandmasters got the better of Continental Kings 10-9.
The opening day of the GCL Season 4 got off to a blockbuster start as hundreds of chess fans stormed to the venue to watch the world’s best players in action, and they were treated to some high-quality chess.
