Any game at all has some element of luck involved. There will always be an incalculable, unforeseen element that could work in your favour or against you, whether you know it or not. However, when it comes to some games, this is more apparent than with others. 

Cricket is one of the games that people might not feel involves luck to a huge degree. However, the various combinations of factors involved in any given scenario can lead to an enormous amount of unpredictability, and that’s before you get on to factors that are outside of any player’s control.

The Myriad of Factors

So, how do all of those factors combine? Surely, if the factors themselves can be predicted and understood to be based on something closer to skill than luck, then the result is still more calculable than you would normally think luck to be. In theory, yes, but that might not ever pan out to be the case. 

The batsman might plan to hit the ball in a certain way, the bowler might be trying to bowl him out, and those in the field might have positioned themselves in the best areas possible to catch out the batsman. The differing intentions of each of these (and how they each respond to sudden changes in the outcomes) mean that how any given ball unfolds is not necessarily going to be how anyone planned it. 

The Ground, the Weather and the Crowd

Still, that could be argued to just be the fact of the game itself. What might fit the umbrella of ‘luck’ much more to many people could be the entirely unforeseen factors. Elements like weather often determine whether or not a cricket match even goes ahead a lot of the time, but even on a sunny day, the glare or position of the sun can do a lot to impact how people play. Similarly, the ground itself, while managed thoroughly, could create a difference in how a ball lands or how much a player is able to run.

Another element to consider could even be the crowd. While cricket crowds are much more low-key than football crowds a lot of the time, unforeseen disturbances could create distractions that impact how effectively the players perform. 

Luck in Digital Cricket Games

There are other ways to experience cricket, of course, through digital recreations. In some formats—like cricket video games—the element of luck is minimal and driven by programmed mechanics. However, in arcade-style games such as Cricket Star, the experience relies more on chance.
