The South African team is scheduled to tour Australia in December 2022 and January 2023, for the first time since 2008-09, to play three test matches and three ODIs. The test matches would form part of the 2021-23 ICC World Test Championship, while the ODI series would have formed part of the 2020-23 inaugural ICC World Cup Super League.

The ODI series was originally scheduled to be played in July 2022 as the fixtures clashed with their new domestic T20 league. ICC scratched the matches and the World Cup Super League points for all three matches were awarded to Australia.

Before this test series, South Africa will play a 4-day warm-up game against Cricket Australia XI on December 9th. The first test will commence on December 17th at The Gabba, followed by the 2nd test on December 26th at MCG, Melbourne. The final test will start on January 4th at Sydney Cricket Ground.

Prior to this, Australia and South Africa have played 98 tests against each other, where Australia have been mighty dominant with 52 wins. South Africa have won 26 matches while 20 matches have ended in a draw. Out of these, 41 tests have been played in Australia where the home team has won 21 matches, and the Proteas have managed 10 wins while 10 matches have ended in a draw.

The tour will then move on to the ODI series where the first match will be played at Hobart on January 12th. The 2nd ODI will be played in Sydney on January 14th, followed by the last ODI on January 17th in Perth.

In the ODI format, the two teams have squared off in 103 matches where Australia have won 48 while South Africa have won 51 ODIs. Three matches have ended in a tie while one match has returned no result. In Australia, the two teams have played 39 matches where both teams have won 19 ODIs each with a tied game.
