Angelo Mathews Bids Emotional Farewell to Test Cricket

Sri Lankan legend Angelo Mathews brought the curtain down on his illustrious Test career after the opening match against Bangladesh in Galle.

The 37-year-old ends with 8,241 runs in 119 Tests at an average of 44.4, alongside 33 wickets. He received a guard of honour from Bangladesh and heartfelt applause from fans.

Mathews, who debuted in 2009 and captained Sri Lanka in 34 Tests, said, “I can’t believe the love I’ve received. It’s overwhelming.” Reflecting on career highlights, he named the 3-0 whitewash of Australia and the Headingley win in 2014. As Sri Lanka’s third-highest run-scorer, Mathews exits with grace, leaving the future in the hands of the next generation.
