Most runs in T20 World Cup history: The 8th edition of the T20 World Cup is set to start in Australia on October 16th. A total of 16 teams will participate in the tournament. T20 World Cup have been played seven times ever since its inception in 2007. Let's take a look at the top 5 batters with the most runs in the T20 World Cup history.

Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene ranks 1st on this list, with 1,016 runs to his name in T20 World Cups, which is most by any batter. In 31 innings, Jayawardene averaged 39.07 with a strike rate of 134.74, registering a ton and 6 half-centuries. Mahela is the only player till now to score more than 1,000 runs in T20 World Cup.


#2. Chris Gayle (965 runs)

Universe Boss and a T20 legend, West Indies Chris Gayle has 965 runs to his name in 31 innings at the T20 World Cup. Gayle has 2 centuries and 7 fifties to his name with an average of 34.46 while striking at 142.75. Gayle is the only player to score two tons in the T20 World Cup history. 


#3. Tilakaratne Dilshan (897 runs)

Former Sri Lankan all-rounder, Tilakaratne Dilshan ranks next on this list with 897 runs to his name in 34 T20 World Cup innings. Dilshan has registered 6 fifties in the World Cup, averaging 30.93 while striking at 124.06. 


#4. Rohit Sharma (847 runs)

Current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is placed fourth on this list with 847 runs in 30 T20 World Cup innings. Rohit played the first World Cup, in 2007, and is ready to lead team India in the 2022 edition. The Hitman has scored 8 fifties in the T20 World Cup with an average of 38.59, while striking at 131.52. 


#5. Virat Kohli (845 runs)

Following Rohit closely, former Indian skipper Virat Kohli is just behind with 845 runs to his name in just 19 innings at the T20 World Cup. Kohli averages an impeccable 76.81 while striking at 129.60, along with 10 fifties to his name. The impeccable Indian batter has also won the 'Player of the Tournament' twice in T20 World Cups despite not winning the trophy once.
