The eighth edition of the ICC T20 World Cup will begin on 16th October 2022 in Australia, with the final scheduled for 13th November 2022. A total of 16 teams will battle for the title in this mega event.

T20 World Cup 2022 Format

16 Teams will participate in the tournament that will have two rounds - Round 1 and Super 12s.

The eighth edition of the T20 World Cup, which was supposed to be held in Australia in 2020, was postponed in July 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. ICC confirmed then that the 2021 World Cup would be played in India as planned, which was moved to UAE & Oman, and the eighth edition of the T20 World Cup will be hosted by Australia. 

Australia, who were supposed to host the 7th edition of the T20 World Cup, will now host the 8th edition of the T20 World Cup. The Australian team are also the defending champions courtesy of the title win in 2021.

T20 World Cup Qualified Teams

The twelve teams which reached the Super 12 stage in T20 World Cup 2021 qualified for the Super 12 phase of the 2022 edition of the tournament. Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Pakistan, New Zealand and South Africa have already qualified for the Super 12 stage in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Namibia, Scotland, Sri Lanka and West Indies were placed in the group stage of the World Cup. Apart from these teams, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates progressed to the T20 World Cup from the Global Qualifier A tournament while Netherlands and Zimbabwe progressed through the Global Qualifier B. 

A total of 45 matches will be played in the T20 World Cup 2022, including 12 matches in Round 1. In the Super 12 stages, 30 matches will be played amongst 12 teams, divided into two groups of 6 teams each. The top 4 teams will progress to the two semi-final matches, followed by the two winning teams playing the final against each other for the title.

T20 World Cup Venues

ICC & Cricket Australia have finalized seven venues where the tournament will be held - Geelong, Hobart, Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.

The eight teams in round one will be divided into two groups - A & B. Top two teams from each group will qualify for the next stage.

The Super 12 stage will see four teams getting into two groups according to their standings in Round 1. The team from Group A having the first position, and the second position team from Group B will join Group 1. The team having the second position in Group A and the first position team of Group B will join Group 2.
