Sri Lankan pacer and former captain Suranga Lakmal will retire from international cricket after the test series against India. Sri Lanka cricket informed of this through a press release. The 34-year old Lakmal made his international debut against India only in 2009. 

Suranga Lakmal captained the Sri Lankan Test team in 5 matches in 2018. Sri Lanka managed to defeat South Africa 2-0 and became the first Asian nation to win a test series in South Africa in 2 of these matches. Apart from this, the 3-match test series in the tour of West Indies ended in a draw.

Lakmal has played 68 test matches in his career, registering 168 wickets. While in the ODIs, the pacer has picked up 100 wickets in 86 matches. Apart from this, he has picked 7 wickets in 11 T20Is.

Suranga Lakmal was the first player from Hambantota to represent Sri Lanka in international cricket. He picked up a wicket on the first ball of the test match at Pallekel International Cricket Stadium, equalling records of greats like Imran Khan & Kapil Dev.
