In the first match of the Tri-Nation series in New Zealand, Pakistan defeated Bangladesh by 21 runs to register a win in the first match of the tournament. Mohammad Rizwan yet again performed with the bat while all bowlers managed to pick up wickets as Bangladesh were halted to 146/8 while chasing a target of 168 runs. 

Bangladesh lost their first wicket in the form of Mehidy Hasan Miraz (10) in the 5th over against Mohammad Wasim Jr., while Sabbir Rahman (14) was dismissed in the 6th over by Haris Rauf. Litton Das and Afif Hossain then added 50 runs for the 3rd wicket.

Litton was dismissed after scoring 35 runs while Afif managed 25 runs off 23 balls. Later on, Yasir Ali, batting at number 7, remained the top scorer as he smacked 5 fours & 2 sixes to score an unbeaten 42* runs off 21 balls. Ultimately, Bangladesh fell short at 146/8 in 20 overs, losing the match by 21 runs. For Pakistan, Mohammad Wasim Jr. grabbed 3 wickets while Mohammad Nawaz picked up 2 wickets. Shahnawaz Dahani, Haris Rauf and Shadab Khan managed 1 wicket each. 

In the first innings, opener Mohammad Rizwan maintained his golden form as he smacked an unbeaten 78 runs off 50 balls with 7 fours & 2 sixes. Shan Masood (31) and Babar Azam (22) contributed with brief knocks while other batters failed to cross the 20-run mark as Pakistan managed 167/5 in 20 overs.

For Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed picked up 2 wickets while Hasan Mahmud, Nasum Ahmed and Mehidy Hasan Miraz managed 1 wicket each. Earlier, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan won the toss & opted to bowl first against Pakistan in the first match of the Tri-Nation tournament. This match was played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.
