Ranji Trophy: Rahane, Sarfaraz Knocks Go In Vain As Delhi Beat Mumbai After 42 Years

In Ranji Trophy's 88-year-old-long history, this is only the second time Delhi have defeated Mumbai.

In the Ranji Trophy 2022-23 match played between Delhi and Mumbai in Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday (January 20th), the hosts defeated Mumbai to script history. Delhi defeated Mumbai for the first time in 42 years in a Ranji Trophy match. In the tournament's 88-year-old-long history, this is only the second time Delhi have defeated Mumbai. 

In the first innings, Mumbai came out to bat in the first innings and Sarfaraz Khan smacked yet another ton, scoring 125 runs. Prithvi Shaw contributed 40 runs, as well as Mumbai, posted 293 runs in the first innings. Pranshu Vijayran was the top bowler for Delhi with 4 wickets to his name, while Harshit Rana and Yogesh Sharma grabbed 2 wickets each.

In reply, Delhi were powered to 369 runs courtesy of Vaibhav Rawal's (114) century and 85 runs by captain Himmat Singh. Hrithik Shokeen also contributed with 45 runs. For Mumbai, Tushar Deshpande picked up 4 wickets, Shams Mulani picked up 3 wickets, Mohit Avasthi managed 2 wickets while Tanush Kotian also registered a wicket. 

In the 3rd innings, Mumbai were bowled out for just 170 runs with Divij Mehra picking up a 5-for. Ajinkya Rahane (51) and Tanush Kotian (50) scored fifties for Mumbai but none of the other batters contributed. Delhi, coming out to bat in the 4th innings, had an ordinary target of 95 runs to chase down.

Delhi lost just two wickets as they chased down the total in 15.3 overs. Opener Vaibhav Sharma scored 36 runs in 49 balls while Hrithik Shokeen also scored an unbeaten 36 runs in 39 balls to complete the historic win for Delhi.
