England's first Ashes test has gone from bad to worse after star all-rounder Ben Stokes hurt his knee during the second day at the Gabba, Brisbane.

Stokes appeared to have hurt his knee in the 29th over when he chased the ball to the boundary. In the press conference, England's bowling coach confirmed his injury and said Stokes will be assessed overnight.

"Obviously Ben has hurt himself on the field today so didn't bowl full pace at the back end of the day. Think our medical guys will assess him overnight and see how he is. Other than that the guys are okay," Jon Lewis said.

Ollie Robinson also went off the field and didn't take the second new ball but Lewis confirmed that he is fine. However, his absence and Stokes' rather off day meant Joe Root had to bowl himself along with Jack Leach, who had been smashed all around the Gabba.

"It wouldn't be one of his better days and he'll want to put it at the back of his memory, but like I said about the other guys I know Jack is a pretty resilient fella. We're definitely not defeated yet. Expect Jack to come back strong tomorrow and show the character I know he has," Lewis said.
