Former South Africa: Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers expects the 2027 Men’s ODI World Cup to inspire a new generation of cricketers from the country, and drew parallels to how the 2003 edition being hosted in the country shaped his own early journey as a 19-year-old aspiring to play international cricket.
South Africa will co-host the 50-over mega event alongside Zimbabwe and Namibia from October 2 to November 21, 2027 and mark the tournament's return to the region for the first time in 24 years. While South Africa and Zimbabwe were co-hosts for the 2003 Men’s ODI World Cup alongside Kenya, Namibia will be hosting its maiden senior ICC tournament as a host nation.
“Yes, the ODI World Cup in 2027 is coming back to South Africa for the first time since 2003. The 2003 World Cup played a huge part in my career. It had a big influence and impact on me. I clearly remember a cricketing clinic Australian had at the University of Pretoria. That's where I played my cricket at that time, at the age of 19. I got to know Adam Gilchrist a bit better. He worked with my wicketkeeping skills that day.
