South Africa nearly had a wicket with the very first ball when Alastair Cook was given out lbw to Morne Morkel. But Cook immediately reviewed umpire Paul Reiffel’s decision and, with replays indicating the ball would have gone over the stumps, the former Australia paceman’s verdict was overturned.

Earlier, South Africa's big lead was built on second-innings half-centuries by opener Dean Elgar (80), Hashim Amla (87) and captain Faf du Plessis (63). Ali finished with 4-78 to lead England's bowling effort.

The record score made by any team to win in the fourth innings of a Test is the West Indies’ seven for 418 against Australia at St John’s, Antigua, in 2002/03. England’s highest record chase in 4th innings is seven for 332 against Australia at Melbourne back in 1928/29.
