Shubman Gill’s brilliant 84 on 9th May powered Gujarat Titans to a dominant win over Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur. Shubman Gill, alongside Sai Sudharsan (55), laid the foundation with a superb 118-run opening partnership as Gujarat posted a season-high and match-winning 229/4 and then dismissed the hosts for 152 in 16.3 overs.
This was GT’s fourth successive win, which lifted them to 14 points alongside Sunrises Hyderabad at the top of the standings and strengthened their playoff hopes. The most noteworthy aspect of the win was Gill’s fluent 44-ball 84, with nine fours and three sixes, registering his fourth half-century of the season.
Shubman Gill, in IPL 2026, is leaving no stone unturned in giving a fitting reply to all his detractors who were almost unanimous in their T20 verdict against him, terming that playing modern T20 is not his cup of tea. He was dropped from India's T20 WC squad, but this shifted his focus towards a quicker batting approach and impressive performance in IPL 2026.
No doubt, GT’s mid-season show cannot be attributed to Shubman Gill alone, but no one can deny that he has played a dominating role. He tops in contribution of a batsman in team runs in this IPL and his contribution stands at 27.8% of team runs, with +12 SR in comparison to a team.
Let us look at some more facts:
His IPL 2026 performance: 462 runs in 10 innings @ 46.20 with an SR of 160.42, including 4 fifties. Only H Klaasen (SRH- 494), Abhishek Sharma (SRH- 475) and KL Raul (DC-468) were ahead of him in run tally but each of them played 11 innings.
Gradual improvement in Shubman Gill’s SR: He is already ahead of his IPL 2024 strike rate of 147.40 and his IPL 2025 strike rate of 155.88. The rise is steady and significant and most importantly, he has come out as the least collapsible opener of the season, and he has made 235 powerplay runs off 135 balls at 174.07.
Success story of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan's partnership: The duo has stitched useful and big opening stands in changing the GT’s fortune. They are very close to the IPL record of 10 centuries scored by the legendary Royal Challengers Bengaluru pair, Virat Kohli & AB de Villiers (in 76 games). Gill and Sudharsan now have nine century partnerships (in 43 games) together in the IPL, at par with Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle’s tally (in 59 games) for the second-most century stands by any pair in the IPL.
Gill and Sudharsan have also equalled the record for the most century stands for the opening wicket in the IPL, with six 100-plus stands together, matching the SRH duo David Warner & Shikhar Dhawan and Abhishek Sharma & Travis Head. As the season progresses, the race is still open.
Overall IPL record: 4328 runs in 125 innings @ 40.07 with an SR of 140.74, including 4 hundreds and 30 fifties. He is the only batter in the IPL to score 4000+ runs with a 40+ average and 140+ SR.
