Kolkata, April 26 (IANS) The BCCI on Sunday recommended dashing batsman Rohit Sharma for this year's Arjuna award.

"The (Board of Control for Cricket in India) working committee recommended Rohit Sharma for the Arjuna award for the year 2015," its secretary Anurag Thakur said in a release.

The Mumbai boy, who rewrote the world record of the highest individual ODI score in an innings last year by blazing o 264 against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens, has struck seven One Day International hundreds so far.

When he cracked a 126-ball 137 against Bangladesh in the World Cup last month, Rohit joined the elite club of cricketing legends Englishman David Gower and West Indies' Viv Richards by becoming the third batsman to score two centuries at the historic MCG as an overseas player.

He first came into the limelight after some class batting acts at number three in the Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka in 2006, which prompted the selectors to pick him for the senior national team, but he was in and out of the team due to a lack of consistency till 2013.

The working committee also paid homage to departed young cricketers Ankit Keshri of Bengal, Gaurav Kumar of Jharkhand and the unfortunate victims of the earthquake which devastated Nepal and India.
