Indian Olympic Association: Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha looked back on her remarkable journey from the athletics track to sports administration, saying her era was vastly different from the present generation and that her achievements were built through passion and hard work despite limited facilities.
Usha, famously known as the ‘Payyoli Express’, competed at three Olympic Games: Moscow in 1980, Los Angeles in 1984, and Seoul in 1988. She made history at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics by becoming the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic athletics final, narrowly missing a medal in the 400m hurdles after finishing fourth.
Reflecting on her achievements, Usha said there was little point in comparing her performances with those of athletes competing today because the circumstances were completely different. “I actually cannot compare at all. See my winning performance and record, all those things with my passion and hard work,” Usha told IANS on the sidelines of the ongoing Asian Games here.
