Types of Real Money Poker

There are many poker variants to be enjoyed but we are simply listing the most popular poker games, the ones that are played the most online and at land based casinos around the world. Here they are in order according to online casino statistics:

  • Texas Hold’em Poker
  • Three Card Poker Draw
  • Caribbean Stud Poker
  • Stud Poker
  • Five Card Omaha Poker
  • 7 Card Stud Poker

Naturally, these games are all different from one another but the rules applied are loosely the same from one poker game to the next. Here we look at the basics of each poker game, allowing you the opportunity to choose a game best suited to your preference from following this online poker guide.

Texas Hold’em

This is the poker variant most commonly played all over the world. Poker tournaments are based on Texas Hold’em and the game has only increased in popularity since being introduced to online gambling. The game begins when the first blinds have been called. This is the first bet. Thereafter each player is dealt two cards facedown, beginning with the player on the left and moving counter-clockwise until all players have two cards. Players now continue to call, raise or fold. The next 5 cards are dealt on the table and are referred to as the ‘flop’ in poker.

Community cards are what players use to try and better their poker hands. After the first round of betting has been completed, a community card is dealt with the players, and bets are placed again. Then the final card, completing the ‘river’ is dealt and bets are placed. When all bets have been placed after this round the cards are revealed and the winner with the best hand wins the pot.

Three Card Poker Draw

To start players will place a wager on the prediction that they will have a pair or better than a pair in the poker game, this is referred to as the ante. Thereafter, three cards are dealt with each player but facedown. The game is played against the dealer only and not the other players at the table.

The player then decides if he or she wants to place a wager, meeting the ante amount, which occurs after the player has looked at their poker hand. However, if the player chooses to fold, the dealer collects the ante and or whatever wagers have been made by said poker player.

Should the player decide to make a bet after the ante has been made, the player's cards will be revealed determining who won the round, the player or the dealer.

Caribbean Stud Poker

Similar to 5 Card Stud Poker, Caribbean Stud Poker is played against the house rather than other players. Each player places their ante to begin the pot. The player will then reveal his card and players are then able to look at their cards and choose whether or not they would like to place a wager on the poker game.

Next, players will be required to place a wager or fold. The dealer will then reveal the player's 4 downward-facing cards which he will then compare his hand which contains 5 cards. The player to beat the dealer’s hand walks away with the ante and any additional bets made. The rules are similar to 3 Card Poker Draw.

Stud Poker

One of the ‘Stud Poker’ variants as mentioned above. These all share a similar gameplay strategy and poker rules.

5 Card Omaha Poker

This game is a variant of Omaha Hi, another popular poker game played online and at land based casinos. Two players will need to place the ante bets before the game begins. Then the cards are dealt, 5 to each player and facing downward. Cards are dealt with each player one by one. Players will then place bets, call, raise or fold. Once betting has been completed the dealer will then place 3 cards facing upward for all poker players to see. These cards are also referred to as the flop, and upon being dealt another round of betting commences. When this round is complete another card is dealt with the flop by the dealer and can be used by all players at the table to help form a winning hand. Bets are then placed again and the dealer then places a fifth and final card on the flop, making it a river, just like Texas Hold’em. The last bet is then called and players then reveal their cards to reveal the winner. The winner takes the pot.

As you can see, there is common terminology used amongst real money poker games and the basics are similar to one another. So learn one poker game and learn the fundamentals of them all.
