Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Lucknow Super Giants, IPL 2022 – Tactical Review

Sunrisers Hyderabad lost another game as they failed to chase down 170 runs against Lucknow Super Giants in the 12th match of the IPL 2022 at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai. SRH fell short by 12 runs of the target. 

Sunrisers didn't make any change to the playing XI while Super Giants brought in Jason Holder in place of Dushmantha Chameera - a good change taking into account the West Indian's all-round abilities. 

SRH won the toss and opted to field first. 

1) Early Introduction of Washington Sundar 

Quinton de Kock vs OB - 115 SR, 28 Avg. Evin Lewis vs OB - 108 SR, 35 Avg.

SRH had a great matchup upfront - two LHBs vs an OB and they decided to use that and succeeded. In the 2nd over, Sundar - probably one of the best defensive offie in IPL - was introduced against Quinton de Kock. In the same over, de Kock got out caught at covers. 

Evin Lewis came at the crease and decided to sweep Sundar from the first ball. Lewis faced three balls against Sundar and attempted to sweep all of them. There were three missed sweeps and three appeals. The last one was a success and Sundar got Lewis out inside powerplay. 

Sundar was bowling well and was given the third over inside the powerplay. LSG scored 32/3 in the first six overs with de Kock, Lewis, and Manish Pandey back out. 

2) Deepak Hooda's Intent vs Out Of Control Umran Malik 

Umran Malik was clicking close to 150 kmph on every ball he bowled. However, his lack of control over the ball let Deepak Hooda take advantage of his speed. 

After three quiet overs after the powerplay (16 runs & only one boundary), Hooda decided to take on Umran. The 10th over costed 20 runs and LSG had a move on. In the 14th over as well, Hooda and Rahul took 16 runs from Umran's over. 

3) SRH's Slog Overs Gamble 

With KL Rahul set, Williamson kept Sundar's last over for the 17th over. It was a perfect over for Rahul to finally slog as he and Ayush Badoni took out 17 runs from that over. Williamson could have swapped one of Shepherd's overs with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who completed his spell in the 18th over only. 

Romario Shepherd was given the last over and he conceded 17 runs. Shepherd had kept missing his line and length in all his overs and it was a major gamble to give him the last over. 

4) SRH Doesn't Learn 

In their first match, SRH sent Nicholas Pooran to face the swinging ball inside the first three overs ahead of Aiden Markram. He scored a nine-ball duck. Now against Lucknow, SRH lost the second wicket in the fifth over. Spinners had to come in from the next over. 

Instead of sending Pooran now, Markram walked in. The South African scored 12 in 14 balls and got out in the 11th over against Krunal Pandya. Sending Pooran to face most of the spin overs along with Rahul Tripathi, who was already bashing the rest of the lot could have taken SRH into a better position with Markram still to come to face pace. 

5) Avesh Khan Variation 

Avesh bowled two overs inside the powerplay and he got two wickets - Kane Williamson and Abhishek Sharma - in each over - both balls were cutters. In his next two overs as well, Avesh kept mixing his line, lengths, and speed. Only conceded two fours and a six during his spell but got four key wickets. 

The 17th over pushed SRH completely out of the game as Avesh removed Pooran and Abdul Samad on consecutive deliveries.
