Asia Cup Flashback - When Team India won The Inaugural Edition In 1984

The first edition of the Asia Cup was held in Sharjah, UAE, in 1984. India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka participated in the event. It was played in a round-robin format, where each team played the other once.

India, led by Sunil Gavaskar, won both its matches, winning the inaugural Cup. Sri Lanka came in second, while Pakistan lost both its matches.

Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the opening match of the tournament. India started the campaign by registering a thumping victory over Sri Lanka by 10 wickets. In their next match against arch-rivals Pakistan, India won the low-scoring match by 54 runs. After opting to bat first, India scored 188/4 in 46 overs. Indian bowlers bowled Pakistan out for 134 in 39.4 overs.

India finished on top of the table and were declared the first Asia Cup winners. They ended up with four points and a net run rate of 4.2.

Surinder Khanna finished as the leading run-scorer of the tournament with 107 runs from two matches at an average of 107 and a strike rate of 75.88 with a top score of 56.

Ravi Shastri finished as the leading wicket-taker with four wickets from two matches at an economy rate of 3.11 and a strike rate of 25.5.
