Stand-in India captain Smriti Mandhana lavished praise on debutant Amanjot Kaur and all-rounder Deepti Sharma for setting up a convincing 27-run victory over South Africa in the Womens T20I tri-series opener at Buffalo Park Stadium.
On a slow pitch, India were in trouble at 69/5 in 12 overs, before Amanjot (41 not out) and Deepti (33) shared a 76-run stand to help them reach 147 in 20 overs, which proved enough to get their campaign at the tri-series off to a winning start.
"We spoke before the match that we need to show our character and the team did that. The partnership between Amanjot and Deepti showed that. With the start we got, we thought of getting to 120-130, but we got about 15 runs more, credit to them Whatever they did, it was amazing to watch," said Smriti in the post-match presentation ceremony.
