ENG vs NZ 1st Test: An England player who was probably watching the test match on his TV screen on Day 1, was called upon to make his test debut against New Zealand after Jack Leach was ruled out after mere overs on Day 1 due to a concussion. Matthew Parkinson joined the England team on Day 2, and finally managed to pick his first international test wicket on day 3.

After 24 wickets fell in the first two days of the test, Daryl Mitchell & Tom Blundell held the crease and added 195 runs for the 5th wicket and slowed the tumbling of wickets. However, once this partnership was broken on Day 3, a Kiwi batting collapse followed.

When Mitchell was dismissed, New Zealand's score read 251/5, and they went on to be restricted to 285 runs. Apart from Mitchell and Blundell, the only NZ batter who managed to cross the 20-run mark was Tim Southee. The bowled scored 21 runs in 26 deliveries with 4 fours.

However, the Kiwi pacer became Matt Parkinson's first test victim. In the 92nd over, New Zealand were already 9 wickets down. Parkinson bowled a 44 MPH delivery on the full length outside the line of off stump. Southee managed a thick outside edge on his booming drive, and Root held on to a comfortable catch to dismiss Southee and bowl out New Zealand.

While talking about the match, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss & opted to bat first against England in the 1st test. New Zealand were restricted to 132 in the first innings and New Zealand in reply were bowled out for 141. While writing this piece, England are at 31/1 at Lunch on Day 3, chasing a target of 277 runs. This match is being played at Lord's, London.
