Shubman Gill Celebrates His Team India Selection With A Thunderous T20 Ton; Smashes 98 Runs In Just Boundaries

Shubman Gill smacked his maiden T20 century in the quarter-final match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy between Punjab and Karnataka.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the Indian squads for the New Zealand tour on Sunday (31st October). Young batter Shubman Gill has been included in the Indian T20I side for the first time. On the very next day (November 1st, Monday), Gill smacked his first T20 ton. 

In the quarter-final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Karnataka at Eden Gardens, Gill batted at a strike rate of 229.09 as he smashed 126 runs in 55 balls. During this, he completed his ton of 49 deliveries. Gill smacked 11 fours (44 runs) and 9 sixes (54 runs), that is, he smacked 98 runs off his innings off just 20 balls through fours & sixes.

Gill came out to open the innings for Punjab, and Punjab lost two early wickets and were at 10/2. From thereon, Gill got together with Anmolpreet Singh (59) and added a huge 151 runs for the third wicket. After that, Gill etched a partnership of 44 runs with Sanvir Singh for the 4th wicket. Courtesy of this knock by Gill, Punjab posted a massive total of 225 runs for 4 wickets in 20 overs. 

Gill has registered the record for the highest individual score by a Punjab batter in T20s. Prior to this, Prabhsimran Singh held the record with his knock of 119* runs against Goa in 2021. 

In the ongoing tournament of Syed Mushtaq Ali, Gill has played 5 matches and while averaging 53.75, he has scored 215 runs – including a half-century and a ton.

While talking about the match, Karnataka managed to score 216/6 in 20 overs and lost the game by 9  runs. Abhinav Manohar kept Karnataka in the hunt scoring an unbeaten 62 runs off 29 balls while Manish Pandey scored 45 runs off 29 balls. However, the target proved a little too much for the Karnataka team to chase down.
