In the 8th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2023), Shikhar Dhawan led from the front as he guided Punjab Kings to a 5-run win against the Rajasthan Royals at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. Shikhar Dhawan played a stunning unbeaten knock as he guided his team to a winning total on Wednesday (5th April). 

Prabhsimran Singh gave an excellent start to the Punjab Kings in the powerplay as he smacked 60 runs off just 34 balls with 7 fours & 3 sixes. Captain Shikhar Dhawan on the other end held the crease as he first played the anchor and accelerated in the dying overs to take his team to a good total. Dhawan remained unbeaten on 86 runs off 56 balls with 9 fours & 3 sixes.

In reply, Rajasthan Royals sent out Ashwin to open along with Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jaiswal was dismissed in the 2nd over after scoring 11 runs which brought in Jos Buttler, who was also dismissed inside the powerplay after scoring 19 runs off 11 balls. Sanju Samson (42 off 25), Shimron Hetmyer (36 off 18) and impact sub-Dhruv Jurel (32* off 15) played good knocks but Punjab eventually fell 5 runs shy as Nathan Ellis grabbed 4 wickets. 

With this thrilling win, Punjab Kings have replaced Rajasthan Royals in the 2nd spot on the points table with 2 wins in 2 games. Rajasthan Royals are placed fourth now with 1 win in 2 games while Royal Challengers Bangalore are placed 3rd with a win in 1 game and a better NRR than RR. 

PBKS batter Shikhar Dhawan was adjudged the 'player of the match' for his excellent knock and is now placed 3rd on the Orange cap list with 126 runs in 2 games. Ruturaj Gaikwad is leading the charts with 149 runs in 2 games, followed by LSG's Kyle Mayers who has 126 runs in 2 games as well but at a better strike rate than Dhawan.

PBKS pacer Nathan Ellis climbed to the 4th spot on the leading wicket-takers (Purple Cap) list with his 4-wicket haul against RR. Mark Wood is leading the charts with 8 wickets in 2 games, followed by Rashid Khan (GT), Ravi Bishnoi (LSG), Nathan Ellis (PBKS) and Yuzvendra Chahal (RR) all with 5 wickets each.
