For example, MI will play two matches each against the four teams in Group A - KKR, RR, DC and LSG; will play against CSK twice as they are adjacent to each other in the group division, and only 1 match each against SRH, RCB, PBKS and GT.
Similarly, for example, CSK will 2 matches each against SRH, RCB, PBKS and GT; 2 matches against MI as well and only 1 match each against KKR, RR, DC & LSG.
A similar format was adopted in the 2011 version of the IPL where 10 teams participated in an IPL season together for the first time.
