Background

India started the world cup journey with a disappointing performance against England. England thrashed them by 202 runs in the opening match of 1975 World Cup.

Match Overview

The second match was against non-test playing nation East Africa at Headingley. East Africa won the toss and elected to bat first. Against some tight bowling attack they managed to score just 120 runs and were bowled out in 55.3 overs. Madan Lal picked 3 where as Abid Ali and Mohinder Amarnath took 2 wickets each for India. It's important to mention the contribution of Bishen Singh Bedi, who though picked just 1 wicket but bowled the most economical bowling figures of World Cup (still a record) with figures of 12-8-6-1.

Scorecard - India vs East Africa at Leeds

Chasing down a small target of 121, Indian openers won the match in just 29 overs. It was the first time when a team won an ODI by 10 wickets. A different version of Sunil Gavasakar was seen. After a super slow innings against England in the opening match, Gavaskar scored 65* from just 86 balls which included 9 fours also. He was well supported by Farokh Engineer on the other end who scored an unbeaten 54. It was a great comeback by India and specially a big relief for Sunil Gavaskar who was blamed for slow batting in the first match.
