1st Test - England 357/5 at Stumps on Day 1

July 6 (CRICKETNMORE) - England were 357/5 at the close of day 1 play of the first test against South Africa at Lords on Thursday. Joe Root marked his first Test match as England captain with a stunning century and helped his team to bounce back after his team lost 4 wickets for just 76 before lunch.

Earlier, England captain Joe Root won the toss and chose to bat. Then the new captain led the recovery with class and confidence, supported by impressive partnerships Ben Stokes (56) and Moeen Ali, who finished the day 61 not out. 

Philander took 3 wickets for South Africa.
