It was a day that belonged to the bowlers as England scored 53/3 after bowling India out for 191 earlier at the Oval on Thursday.

Joe Root won the toss and put India to bat first in overcast conditions. Root's call went right as India lost both its openers inside the first hour. Rohit Sharma edged one to the keeper off comeback man Chris Woakes while KL Rahul was struck on pads by a nip backer from Ollie Robinson. Cheteshwar Pujara after surviving 31 balls got an edge off James Anderson.

However, Virat Kohli coming in at number 4 played two on drives and in between became the fastest to score 23000 international runs.

India surprised everyone when Ravindra Jadeja walked in at number five ahead of Ajinkya Rahane. Anderson tested Jadeja's defence before the Lunch was called.

Jadeja and Kohli struck a couple of boundaries to begin the second session. In between two of Kohli's glorious drives through the covers, he survived a chance after Joe Root dropped him at slips. Jadeja, who didn't look comfortable for most of the time at the crease, finally edged one to slips after scoring 10.

Kohli looked solid as he reached his second fifty of the series. Ollie Robinson, who had the measure of Indian captain twice, got him once again.

Ajinkya Rahane made a struggling 14 off 47 before Craig Overton got him out at slips as India lost its sixth wicket and England entered the Indian tail.

Shardul Thakur played a counter-attacking inning of 57 off 36 which included seven fours and three sixes to get India to a respectable score after the team was reduced to 127/7. He along with Umesh Yadav added 63 from 48 for the eighth wicket.
As soon as Shardul got out LBW, the rest of the Indian tail got wrapped in the next three balls. India got bowled out for 191.

Chris Woakes took four wickets, Ollie Robinson got three while James Anderson and Craig Overton got one each.

England's innings too didn't start well as Jasprit Bumrah removed both openers - Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed - in one over.
Dawid Malan and Joe Root stabilized the innings with a 46 run partnership in 69 balls. The two looked comfortable while at the crease and got too many boundary balls, especially on the leg stump.

Kohli brought back Umesh Yadav late in the day and gave his captain the wicket India badly wanted - Joe Root. A nip-backer on good length completely up-Rooted the stumps.

Craig Overton came in as nightwatchman as England ended the day at 53/3.
