Joe Root hit fifty before Mohammed Shami struck late in the 2nd session as England scored 138/4 at Tea on Day 1 of the first test.

Resuming the inning at 61/2, Root and Dom Sibley couldn't add much to the score as India's leg-trap plan worked. Shami trapped Sibley as he gave catching practice to KL Rahul, who was there at the short-midwicket.

Jonny Bairstow joined his captain at the crease and the score began to increase slowly. While Shardul Thakur did his holding job well, Mohammed Siraj drifted consistently towards the leg to give easy runs to the English pair.

Root reached his fifty and during that, became the highest run-scorer for England. The pair added 72 runs for the fourth wicket and looked to take the game from India before Shami trapped Bairstow in front and the tea was called.

Brief Score:

England - 138/4 in 50.2 overs (Joe Root - 52*, Mohammed Shami - 2/18)
