Christchurch, 26 Dec (CRICKETNMORE): Skipper Brendon McCullum smashed the fastest test century for New Zealand on the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Christchurch on Friday. New Zealand finished the day with 429/7.

New Zealand were 88 for 3 and in trouble when McCullum joined the crease and smashed 195 off just 134 balls, including 18 fours and 11 sixes. His century came off just 74 balls, and 150 off 103 balls - both the fastest ever for New Zealand. He was well supported by K Williamson (54) and later by Neesham (85) with which he had 126 runs and 153 runs parternship respectively.

During the course of his innings, McCullum also became the first New Zealand batsman to score 1,000 runs in a calendar year, and at the end of his innings, he had 1164 runs at an average of 72.75, with four hundreds - including a triple-century and a double-century.
