Australian wicketkeeper Matthew Wade and out-of-favour opening batter Joe Burns were among five players excluded Friday from Cricket Australia's list of nationally contracted players.
The number of players in the group, which forms the core of Australia's international squads, was cut to 17 from 20, although CA chief selector Trevor Hohns stressed those who missed out would still be considered for representative honours.
Former Test vice-captain Travis Head was also axed, along with all-rounders Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis.
