Spinner Simon Harmer took four wickets to lead South Africa's fightback as they bowled out India for 189 after the hosts managed a slender lead of 30 on day two of the opening Test on Saturday.
India lost regular wickets to survive just 62.2 overs in response to South Africa's first innings total of 159 on a tricky pitch to bat at Kolkata's Eden Gardens.
South Africa were 18-1 after Ryan Rickelton was trapped lbw off Kuldeep Yadav for 11 at the stroke of tea. Aiden Markram was batting on three.
