Ravi Shastri was the most favourite candidate for the role of head coach, until Anil Kumble entered the fray at the 11th hour. But the final ball was given to Kumble.

In an interview given to a website, Shastri said that the decision would have no impact at all on the personal equation. "Anil called me as soon as the appointment was made," he said. "I told him that he has a fantastic bunch of boys to work with, and I'm sure he'll take them to greater heights.I wish him only the very best."

Shastri was appointed team director in August 2014. Under his tenure as director, Team India won Asia Cup, Won test series against south Africa 3-0, Won T20 bilateral series against Australia in Australia 3-0, Won ODI series in England for the first time in 24 years, beat Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka for the first time since 1993, eliminated in semi-final of ICC world Cup 2015 & World T20 2016.
