Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan:<\/b> Nearly a decade after experiencing Indian football as an Indian Super League (ISL) player, Uruguay head coach Diego Forlan has returned to the country in a very different role, with the former striker now preparing the two-time world champions for their friendly against India at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Tuesday.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
Forlan\u2019s first association with India came during his stint with Mumbai City FC, when he spent six months playing across the country. His return has brought back memories of his time in the ISL and of the football culture he encountered in cities such as Kolkata, Mumbai and elsewhere.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been almost 10 years since I came here,\u201d Forlan said. \u201cI had the opportunity to play in the ISL for Mumbai City. I spent six months here, playing in Kolkata, Mumbai and different cities. I discovered a really nice country, with a lot of people and a lot of good football players.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n
Kolkata, in particular, left an impression on the former Uruguay international. Forlan recalled the atmosphere around the games during his time in India, pointing to the strong support for football in several parts of the country. \u201cEvery time the team was playing here, the stadium was full,\u201d he said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n
Forlan also identified Kerala, Goa and the northeast as regions where he had witnessed a strong football following. \u201cThey are really passionate about football. They have good players as well.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n
His assessment of Indian football is not based solely on memories from his ISL stint. Forlan was also present in the stands when India faced Brazil in Kolkata, giving him an opportunity to watch the national team at close quarters ahead of Uruguay\u2019s meeting with the hosts.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n
While India suffered a heavy defeat against Brazil, Forlan saw enough in the performance to caution his players against underestimating their opponents.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n
\u201cIndia had some really good players. They knew what to do,\u201d he said. \u201cThere were some really nice combinations. If you give them time and space, they can damage you, and they can play well. So you have to respect everybody.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n
Forlan also believes matches against higher-ranked opposition can play an important role in India\u2019s development. With Uruguay providing another demanding test, he felt such fixtures could help the hosts gain valuable experience. \u201cI think it\u2019s good that the national team is playing these kinds of friendly games. In the future, they can have more games like this, so they can learn and become a better team.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n
Uruguay have spent nearly a week in Kolkata ahead of the match, allowing the squad to experience the city beyond the football pitch. Forlan said the reception from the people had added to their stay. \u201cThe people are very humble, and the hospitality is great,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery time I came here to India, people have been really kind.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n
The players also managed to explore a little of Kolkata before the weather disrupted their plans. \u201cWe just saw very little. You\u2019re a really big country. But it\u2019s a very historic culture, so it was nice to be around.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n
Food, naturally, was another part of the Kolkata experience. Asked whether the Uruguay squad had sampled some of the city\u2019s local specialities, Forlan kept the possibility open for after the match.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n
