Cricket might not be the most popular game in the world, but undoubtedly it's the world's greatest sport. It's a gentleman's sport, full of sportsmanship and with a distinct lack of dishonorable behavior. Cheating is strictly forbidden and rules are enforced. Disrespect for officials is also not tolerated. Cricket is civilized, but without pomp, making it one of the most enjoyable games to watch and play.

Comparing to football, which is actually the most popular sports where you frequently see dangerous tackles, diving, abusive behavior towards other players and the referee, and violence on and off the pitch. For the fans this also means a better atmosphere, where the sport can be enjoyed for what it is and taken less seriously. Also, cricket matches often offer food with the ticket, and that can never be a bad thing!

Perhaps it is the long history of cricket, the centuries of British manners tied into the game, but whats really impressibe is by how the sport has maintained its sense of dignity, even as the modern world corrupts others.

Cricket's gameplay itself is actually incredible. No other sport brings so many skills together. Cricket players bat, bowl, throw and catch, and show an all round fitness and finesse. They must demonstrate reflexes, footwork, strength, precision and many traits that make them worthy of representing their country or local team. Unlike in many sports, players take up each role, and while they may specialize in one or more area, they must hold together across the whole game – a unique balance of individual performance and teamwork.

Betting on cricket isn't as popular as other sports. Of course, people still do it, but even golf seems a more popular choice, with events like the British Open attracting propositions for outright winners such as current favorite Dustin Johnson, who has 17/2 odds on BetStars. It's a nice balance that betting on cricket is possible, but that not many of the fans see this as essential to the game.

One of the main reasons I love cricket, and why it stands above any other sport for me, is the length of the games, especially in Test cricket or Ashes. For those who prefer a fast and furious game, T20 is the one for you, but for me I really like the pace of Test cricket.

A Test match lasts for 5 days with at least 30 hours of gameplay. That's much longer than the 90 minutes of football or 60 minutes of a hockey game. Granted, most sports involve so much vigorous and unsustainable exercise that they couldn't last any longer, but the nature of cricket is that the game moves slow and steady away. This flies in the face of the insatiable modern need for thrills and entertainment that demands a laugh a minute or a goal a second. Cricket holds on to a sense that we can be happy with what we have, and enjoy life without the need for constant drama.

Cricket is like love. It ebs and flows, a slow and beautiful game punctuated by moments of excitement. A journey that lasts for a long time, where players and fans get to know each other over days of play, where respect is the golden rule, and where sportsmanship is very much still alive.
